The caves, shaped by 60 years of quarrying, are defined by massive, irregular stone piers and are partially submerged in water beneath a wooded hill. The design embraces these natural features, creating a seamless blend of nature and architecture where the two mirror each other. Minimal interventions reintroduced the white Vicenza stone through a series of platforms termed ‘Cavea’, inspired by the stepped seating of Roman theatres. These elements create a dialogue between the natural and the constructed, symbolizing occupation and performance. The use of Vicenza stone reflects continuity with the site’s history, as the stone is integrated into and removed from the space. Lighting, designed by Viabizzuno, plays a crucial role in enhancing the venue’s atmosphere, with ambient and stage lighting illuminating the water-filled chambers from below. This approach not only preserves the quarry’s unique character but also accentuates it, resulting in a multifunctional space that honors its historical context while serving contemporary needs. Este enfoque no solo preserva el carácter único de la cantera, sino que también lo acentúa, resultando en un espacio multifuncional que honra su contexto histórico mientras satisface las necesidades contemporáneas.55 Site Plan © David Chipperfield Architects Manifestation Manifestación General Plan © David Chipperfield Architects Minimal architectural interventions such as platforms and ramps, along with stage lighting by Viabizzuno, were introduced to make the space functional for performances, while maintaining the site’s raw and immersive quality.
