Nebula Tower is a new civic landmark that rises above the network of transportation and infrastructure to provide a rich human experience for visitors and passersby alike. The site is at the intersection of the Guadalupe River and Los Gatos Creek, which is the center of the Valley of Heart. The ethereal form allows for visual connectivity to what is and what will be, showing the history of agricultural and natural surroundings coexisting with the innovative influence of the tech corridor. We see the possibility of “technological nostalgia” in a new type of architecture. This was the first international project done by Qinrong. Only great teamwork with multiple collaborators can carry out such a beautiful final delivery. I was also lucky to meet a client who is so patient, organized, and respectful. This early project shows a motivating shift in public interest in what urban architecture, landscape, and installation could be when the boundaries are merged. In the later practice of the lab, we continue to explore the interdisciplinary way of thinking and hybrid types of design-build projects. What is your favorite architectural detail? The most fascinating details are not perfectly drawn and reproduced in construction. Rather, the favorable details are those beautiful expedient solutions that happen on-site during construction. For a renovation project, no drawing can perfectly represent the original site. Where the old meets the new add-on and where the material shifts, expressive intersections take place. The projection curve of railings is the edges of rough terrazzo and polished terrazzo, which defines the almost flat walkable zone and the curvy topographical zone. The grid seams serve as expansion joints but rotate in different directions when they fall on two continuous but varied surfaces, implying the spatial partition. En nuestros proyectos, hemos utilizado vidrio, acrílico, membrana e Nebula Tower - © Deep Origin Lab The Floating Courtyard © Dong Image “Practicality is a considerable driver of creativity. We believe in the immense potential of materials with a translucent quality since they are responsive to the environment and have a lightness aura beyond their solid physicality. In our projects, we did several cases using glass, acrylic, membrane, and even metals, to create visual ambiguity in form and superficiality. How would you describe your design philosophy? Our design philosophy is ‘Tangible Visionary’. By ‘Tangible’, we aim to touch realism and rationality. The grounded practice could be responsive to the context and environment. By ‘Visionary’, one of our design objectives is to consistently create innovative prototypes that could motivate multiplicity and extensive reflection. 23Interviews Entrevistas The Floating Courtyard -© Hao Chen and visions? Site investigation is significant, especially in renovation projects. We sketch a lot in the early phase to find creative and favorable forms. We keep communicating with clients and contractors to ensure the design is executed as needed. When construction begins, we face a lot of new challenges. Yet, this is a very provocative phase when innovative solutions and details can be created to make things possible economically and technically. How do you balance creativity and practicality in your designs? Practicality is a considerable driver of creativity. The value of professionalism is to know where the limit is and work collectively towards that edge so that a vision can be achieved in satisfaction. The creativity lies both in concept and technical details. How does your role as a guest lecturer influence your Cuando comienza la construcción, enfrentamos muchos desafíos nuevos. The Floating Courtyard © Qinrong Liu The project involves renovating an underground entrance plaza, transforming it into a floating courtyard with a translucent fabric membrane structure and a suspended landscape garden. Architecture itself is a discipline in that its knowledge and thoughts integrate multiple subjects, which could be introduced to many fields of design related to space. Meanwhile, interdisciplinary pedagogy is very beneficial for architecture students for their long-term careers. This profession is not only about specialization but also about generic application. The tools we learn and master will have a strong impact on how we process information and imagine our design. No one can always keep up with the latest trends in technology, theory, and instruments. Only by grasping the abstract but timeless principles of design and communication, can someone be a competent architect who creates good design that lasts. What emerging technologies or methodologies do you see shaping the future of architecture? For now, the trend of Artificial Intelligence and Spatial Intelligence doesn’t affect the industry too much, because of the high complexity of the cooperative nature of the profession. How practically these new technologies can really be applied to architecture in the future would be a slow but inevitable process as we can envision. However, what is most interesting is how our notion about physical reality may change in the next few decades. The way we see the world will truly reshape the future of architecture. What advice would you give to aspiring architects? We work in a profession that is both ancient in tradition and highly accessible to the latest technology. Architecture is more and more a vessel of affordance with a stack of complicated engineering and design techniques today. An architect has to be able to communicate and solve emerging problems and demands that have never been seen before as our society and technology keep evolving. A sense of purpose is a necessity since architects build beautiful things for our coextensive environment that brings pleasure to people. relacionado con el espacio. Pavilion Lucida © Hao Chen268.2024 architecture lab Interviews Entrevistas What inspired you to become an architect? David I liked building since I was a child, a classic Lego, motorcycles, whatever. During the summers I worked on my uncle’s farm. I got a professional education as a metalworker later on. My father was an artist who would build larger-scale objects. That’s how I got introduced to the world of architecture. Verena After finishing high school I went to Vienna to study languages and literature. But very soon I decided to start architectural studies at the University of Innsbruck, which my brother was already attending. The very open degree program with a lot of possibilities to find your individual, also artistic, approach attracted me. The nearness to the arts made me feel comfortable. David and Verena Messner | Messner Architects Responsive Architectural Practices Prácticas Arquitectónicas Responsivas © Davide Perbellini27Interviews Entrevistas How would you describe your design philosophy? Building means responding to a spatial necessity. And there are plenty of ways how to answer. With every new project, we are interested in fresh approaches regarding the construction tasks, the mental challenges, the material implementation, the design processes, and the social components. As we are surrounded by a rich fund of buildings the tendency towards refurbishment, redesign, and conversion is remarkable. But being strictly tied to the past can prevent evolution. We think that it is necessary to understand the essence of certain already existing principles to develop them further, to adapt them, and to go beyond. The tools we are using nowadays to design have changed our approach to architecture as they aren’t the same anymore. In addition, the processes of digitally controlled production to some extent make it possible to get rid of the limitations of traditional production, broadening thereby our horizon. Can you tell us about your favorite project and why it stands out? This is a difficult question, which is why we had to think about it for the longest. It is not only the built projects you deeply link with but also the unbuilt. Verena Speaking about a recent project, I am tied to RVTK – ¿Cómo describirían su filosofía de diseño? Verena RVTK © Karina Castro288.2024 architecture lab Interviews Entrevistas St. Joseph in the Woods © Davide Perbellini Renovation and extension of a residential building. It was demanding as we had to deal with three involved parties under one roof. Furthermore, the construction site was more distant than we were used to. The site management required neat and precise preparation, although lots of changes were made at the moment. Maybe this project taught me on the one hand to be more relaxed if things change, and on the other hand that rough details or unfinished ones do not always have a massive influence on the overall impression. Only after getting the pictures from our photographer I could recognize the initial project idea and feel satisfied with the outcome. What is your favorite architectural detail? A good detail at the end always seems natural. You do not see the effort in developing and convincing clients and executors. The wrapped carpet in the meditation space of the attic floor of the church St. Joseph in the Woods forms a nest dissolving in its upper part in wooden boarding. The idea for this expression of coziness and safety came from a wasp nest we had found in the – at that time – dark and unused sub-roof. In the following meeting with the builder’s board, we explained the wrapping by laying down the wasp nest. The reaction was overload. In the end, we realized it and it is significant, a core detail. Al final, lo realizamos y es significativo, un detalle 29Interviews Entrevistas St. Joseph in the Woods © Davide Perbellini The prevailing “genius loci”, the spirit of the place, is strikingly expressed with the phrase “church in the wood”. The framed view is characterized by a continuously changing landscape in the course of the seasons. The contemplation of nature gives the opening its highly meditative meaning. Zentral © Oliver Jaist Another hidden detail can be found in the ceiling element at Café Restaurant Zentral, which serves as a luminaire and bass absorber at the same time. The backlit surface is made of three satin acrylic panels from which the central has symmetric rebates so that it can be lifted and turned around in case of malfunction. Do you have a favorite material? No, not really. Of course, there are certain materials we appreciate for their properties, either technical or sensorial, and maybe others that seem superfluous to us. But primarily a material has to fulfill the requested essential requirements for that precise application. After that, the choice for one material or the other depends on which would meet the demands perfectly. If, furthermore, there is still room for choices, we trust our taste and feelings, abandoning the habitual pattern. Especially regarding the building envelope energy-efficient and sustainable construction and renovation are obligatory in our region to a certain extent. Materials and joints therefore have to be certified. For the interior, there is more wiggle room for experimentation. What is your process for starting a new project? Usually, a project starts with meeting the clients and getting to know each other and their necessities. The on-site inspection is then a further essential step. In addition, the research on urbanistic limitations and the review of existing plan material (in case of renovation) define the precise frame wherein we can move. From this basics, the construction task is specified. We start with sketches, mock-ups, talks, mind maps. Besides a ground survey provides information about the morphology, which is crucial for the development of projects in the landscape. How do you balance creativity and practicality in your designs? central. Next >
