Woodland Community Garden Shed designed by Brendan Callander, Jason Pielak, and Stella Cheung-Boyland in Vancouver, Canada serves as the central hub for the Woodlands Community Garden. Completed in 2014, it offers a space for local educational programs and practical storage. The shed features charred cedar siding, herringbone lattice, and a chalkboard wall, promoting sustainable and interactive design.
The garden shed was creates through a collaboration between UBC (University of British Columbia) architecture students and the Woodlands Community Garden Club. It function as the garden’s focal point, facilitating local education programs and providing storage.
Designed to prevent shadows on garden plots, the shed shades the central meeting area. The design avoids chemical use on site to prevent soil contamination, employing charred cedar siding for natural wood protection.
This charred surface also serves as a chalkboard for educational purposes. A herringbone-patterned lattice system, placed where the building receives the most sunlight, allows for interior lighting and potential vine growth. Seasonal vines provide shade in summer and permit more light when dormant in winter.
The shed integrates sustainable materials and innovative design, ensuring it is both functional and environmentally friendly.
