Winbond Electronics Corporation Zhubei Building designed by XRANGE Architects and JJP Architects & Planners in Zhubei City, Taiwan, has redefined workspace design by integrating ecological preservation and worker well-being into a 19-floor high-tech office environment. This green Gold Energy listed building features innovative ‘Green Pockets’ for mental and physical recharge, fostering a collaborative and sustainable work culture.

For Winbond Corporation, a leading memory solution provider in Taiwan, the Zhubei building was designed to emphasize worker well-being and ecological preservation. The goal was to create a green Gold Energy-listed, people-centric workspace that supports collaboration and efficiency across 19 floors of high-tech offices.

The concept of ‘Green Pockets’ drives the architecture. These are refuge areas with greenery for rest, mingling, brainstorming, and informal meetings, breaking the uniformity of the cubicle-dominated workspace. Vertically stacked, these Green Pockets create large-scale “flutings” on the tower, forming the wavy design of the Tower of Green Pockets.

The wavy flutes of the tower provide significant environmental benefits. They create vertical shadow zones that reduce solar heat gain in the summer and act as heat traps in the winter, maintaining a favorable temperature for the curtain wall year-round.

The tower includes a dining floor with a garden patio, a gym, and a yoga studio. The ground floor features a cafe and an exhibition gallery dedicated to environmental awareness. Wood is extensively used throughout the lobby, with an 8m tall main lobby wall clad in wood panels along its entire 90m length. A 6.8m diameter spiral staircase connects the lobby to the second-floor meeting rooms and the third-floor dining hall and garden. Vertical batons structurally interlocked with wooden blocks create a unique wood screen design used for railings and partitions.

The highlight of the building’s public programs is the auditorium, which extends from the ground floor to create an urban patio underneath. Reflecting Winbond’s support for art and culture, the auditorium features a unique wooden roof structure inspired by the traditional Chinese dugong. This modernized dugong, crafted from engineered wood, forms a spacious diamond lattice of modular 8-point stars, visible from the street through a window wall at the top of the auditorium. The warm wood color on the ground floor enhances the welcoming atmosphere.
