Vista House, designed by Alexander Brenner Architects in Stuttgart, Germany, offers spectacular views over the city. Completed in 2012, this residence blends artistic elements with architectural innovation, creating an open, spacious home that harmonizes with its surroundings.

An art-loving couple purchased a scenic property in the north of Stuttgart, featuring spectacular city views. The property is accessed via a southern road situated below.

The garage, located beneath the garden, is visible only through a wood-clad incision in the existing sandstone wall. Arrival is guided onto the property by a black concrete sculpture, a polished wall. A gently curved path leads to the entrance at the rear of the plot.

Close buildings on the eastern and northern neighboring properties led to an angular design that remains largely closed on these sides. The structure opens to the south and west with floor-to-ceiling or multi-story glazing, offering expansive views.

The angular shape compensates for the varying depths of neighboring buildings and creates a sheltered courtyard-like exterior space in the pool and garden area. Cantilevered roofs protect the south-facing house from the sun and frame the valley view, giving the house its name, “Vista House.”

The clients had specific ideas about their home’s atmosphere and materials. Alexander Brenner designed an open house where spacious rooms create comfort through walls, wall panels, and room-defining fixtures.

The living space extends over two floors to accommodate the clients’ art pieces. The lower garden level features a warmer, more intense living room with a library, workplace, piano, and fireplace. A single-flight stairway leads to the bright, light-flooded upper living level, where white walls serve as a neutral backdrop for art. Deep dark bog oak floorboards run throughout, including the dining room and kitchen, which can be connected or separated by solid oak doors.

Beyond the gallery and airspace, the sleeping area includes a dressing room and bathroom, feeling open due to generous skylights.

The airspace is dominated by a light sculpture by artist Tobias Rehberger, interacting with the house. At night, reflections blend with city lights while the pool shines like an abstract image.
