Villa Mondoukou residential house designed by Aznar + Tailly in Grand-Bassam, Côte d’Ivoire, has transformed holiday living near the province of Mondoukou. Completed in 2023, this 275 m² house merges traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, using locally sourced materials to blend seamlessly into its lush surroundings.

Villa Mondoukou is a holiday home for a couple, situated about a hundred kilometers from Abidjan, surrounded by vast palm trees with close access to the Gulf of Guinea beach. The house features a central tropical rock garden. The walls, made of earth and limestone, are finished with varying shades of earth and lime as the only ornamentation. A central bamboo roof, crafted by traditional workers near Assinie, Ivory Coast, enhances the house’s integration with its environment.

The spatial design plays with levels and sequences. Entry is through a raised slab between two walls, leading into the living room, also on the slab, which connects to a patio with a bamboo roof, creating a skylight.

This patio provides access to two independent bedrooms. The master bedroom is accessed by stairs from the entrance “fault,” offering a direct sea view. To the right of this fault is a tropical bathroom, and to the left is a bedroom with a view of the bamboo roof against the horizon.

Local artisans skillfully crafted the house using low-cost materials such as earth, lime, and bamboo, emphasizing sustainability and aesthetic harmony with the natural landscape.
