Viglostasi Residence, designed by Block722 in Syros, Greece, is a private holiday home that harmoniously blends into its natural surroundings. Completed in 2023, this 500 m² residence draws inspiration from traditional Greek island architecture, featuring minimalist low volumes. The residence includes a principal suite, additional bedrooms, an open-plan living area, two guest suites, and extensive outdoor spaces. The design emphasizes a seamless indoor/outdoor lifestyle, with terraces, gardens, and a 25m infinity pool offering stunning sea views.
From a distance, Viglostasi Residence resembles a traditional island settlement, perched on the rocky slopes above the Mediterranean Sea. Designed by Athens-based Block722, the house adopts the typology of small Aegean villages—minimalist clusters of low volumes often found on hillsides overlooking the sea.
The project was commissioned by a family of four who, inspired by Block722’s previous works on Syros, sought to create their dream retreat.
The brief called for a home inspired by the simple forms of Greek island vernacular, aligning perfectly with Block722’s signature minimalist architecture. The family desired a spacious yet calming environment for living, hosting, and entertaining, embracing the island’s relaxed indoor/outdoor lifestyle.
The resulting 500 m² complex features low, orthogonal volumes arranged around pathways connecting enclosed spaces with terraces, gardens, and patios. The main house includes a principal suite, a secondary bedroom, and an open-plan living space. Two guest suites, connected to the main residence through shared amenities and views, provide additional accommodation. A central outdoor plaza unites the property, leading to a 25m infinity pool and lounge terrace with uninterrupted sea views. Beneath the pool, a home gym and yoga terrace offer private exercise and meditation spaces.
The design skillfully manages the steep site, allowing long views from nearly every angle. The modest use of stone, wood, and plaster helps the complex blend with the Greek landscape. Natural tones, Palladino terrazzo floors, traditional shutters, pergolas, and a garden of native species, including a green roof, further enhance this integration.
Gentle luxury pervades the residence, achieved through spacious interiors and bespoke details like joinery, and high-quality materials such as Olympus marble, travertine stone, bamboo, and oak wood.
The design captures the client’s vision of a home resembling traditional Aegean structures, offering varied views and spaces to enjoy. The residence makes full use of the substantial site, seamlessly connecting indoor and outdoor areas, creating dynamic spatial experiences, and framing views that lead down to the clients’ private cove for swimming and yacht mooring.
