Viet Tri House, a residential renovation by I.House Architecture and Construction in Viet Tri City, Phu Tho, redefines urban living through its innovative design. Completed in 2023, the project expands and revitalizes a cramped urban home, introducing interconnected hanging gardens on the facade to mitigate heat and enhance privacy. The redesign promotes natural light and ventilation, transforming the home into a tranquil and energy-efficient environment.

Located in the heart of Viet Tri City, Phu Tho, Viet Tri House occupies a 97.5 m² plot, measuring 5 meters in width and 19.5 meters in length. I.HOUSE was tasked with renovating and expanding the living space, creating a seamless connection with the homeowner’s existing residence.

Before renovation, the house had a cramped layout common in narrow urban homes. A cumbersome staircase impeded movement and obstructed views, while tight, dimly lit bedrooms and disorganized functional spaces complicated daily life. The building’s west-facing aspect caused intense heat from direct sunlight, especially during summer, and its location on a busy street exposed it to noise and dust pollution. Despite these issues, the house had potential benefits from surrounding open spaces and greenery, which were not being utilized.

I.HOUSE’s renovation concept centered on creating interconnected hanging gardens on the facade. This design counteracts the heat from the western sun and relocates key areas to the rear for enhanced privacy and reduced thermal discomfort. The new design connects fluidly with the existing structure through pathways, a compact garden, and interspersed green spaces. The original structure retains the living room, kitchen, dining area, and garage, while the renovated space was left open for innovative design. The layout was reconfigured, moving the staircase and entrance to the front, resolving traffic issues and promoting air circulation.

Adopting a minimalist approach, I.HOUSE incorporated natural materials and architectural forms. Expansive glass doors at both ends maximize the surrounding greenery and sunlight, ensuring a vibrant visual experience in every room. This also maximizes natural lighting, aiding energy efficiency—crucial in Northern Vietnam’s climate.

The use of basalt and polished concrete throughout the house balances aesthetic appeal and long-term durability. The basalt wall at the entrance shields against sunlight and external noise, ensuring a tranquil interior environment. This wall, while private, permits ample natural light on the ground floor and changes hue with the weather, offering a constantly evolving visual delight.

Viet Tri House brings residents closer to nature and cultivates a peaceful living environment, embodying a sought-after lifestyle in contemporary urban townhouse design.
