Urban Beat residential project designed by WY-TO architects in France has enhanced the existing family home with a respectful yet contemporary vertical extension. Completed in 2015, this project adds a new floor to the house, maintaining its historical significance while contributing to urban densification.
The project extend the family home, inherited from the client’s grandfather, preserving family memories while adapting for future generations.
Following French trends and the 2015 Parisian Exhibition “Roof on Roof,” the new floor addition contrasts with the Tabula Rasa approach, aiming for urban densification rooted in historical context. WY-TO’s method is respectful and sustainable.
The vertical extension uses a wooden structure for its lightweight, quick assembly, and environmental benefits. this a approach allowed the clients to remain in the house throughout construction.
The extension’s design features two block of different sizes, clad in popular and pine, creating a simple yet expressive shape that harmonizes with neighboring proportions.
The varied height of the extension permits natural light into the bedrooms through ceiling openings. A double-volumed staircore at the center of the house is illuminated by generous windows. The wooden cladding includes louvres to allow light in while maintaining privacy from the street. This design explores natural light and views according to the orientation of spaces and their surroundings.
Overall, Urban Beat demonstrates a thoughtful balance of historical preservation and modern urban development, creating a harmonious addition to the family house.
