In the coastal town of Fedje, Norway, a distinctive installation known as The Sisters, composed of nine benches, has become a central gathering place for the local community and visitors alike. Each bench represents one of nine sisters, symbolizing the strong bond and spirit of cooperation among the women who cherish the island. This installation, a collaborative gift from the sisterhood of Feddie Distillery provides a place for social interaction and personal reflection and reflects the communal aspirations and vibrant life of Fedje. Architect Todd Saunders, known for his integration of architecture with the unique characteristics of northern landscapes, has infused this project with simplicity and a profound connection to places, such as the Aurland Lookout and Fogo Island Inn.

The Sisters – a new gathering space at the harbor in Fedje, Norway, visible from the incoming ferry. The installation comprises nine benches, each symbolizing one of the “sisters,” extending a welcome from the quayside. This gift from Feddie Distillery’s sisterhood and women enamored with the island signifies their intent to impact the Fedje community positively.

The benches not only symbolize future hopes and optimism but also foster interaction, serving as a casual meeting point for locals and visitors. The design encourages various communal activities, such as enjoying a coffee, socializing, or simply relaxing while enjoying the scenic views of the arriving boats. These structures, made of Norwegian pine, subtly hint at a future hotel development on the island’s ocean shore.

Despite appearing orderly from one perspective, the arrangement of the benches suggests chaos from another, reflecting the dynamic and ever-changing relationships among sisters and life itself. Since their installation in September 2021, the benches have become a popular spot for all age groups, enhancing the social fabric of Fedje.
