The Jianshi Station and the Tingyun Station, redesigned by TJAD Original Design Studio, are part of a 12-kilometer waterfront public space renovation project in Hangzhou’s Binjiang District. The Jianshi Station, converted from the Holiday Garden restaurant, integrates modern materials and structural enhancements, while the Tingyun Station, reconstructed from Rongzhai, features expanded semi-outdoor spaces. Both stations emphasize sustainable design, blending historical elements with contemporary architecture to create multifunctional public areas that enhance the urban landscape.

The Jianshi Station and the Tingyun Station are situated on the south bank of the Qiantang River, on the north side of Wentao Road and northeast of Fuxing Bridge. These stations are part of the 12-kilometer waterfront public space renovation project in the Binjiang District of Hangzhou, undertaken by the Original Design Studio of TJAD. The Jianshi Station was renovated from the Holiday Garden restaurant. An investigation revealed that the roof truss and facade were dilapidated, and the structural columns, covered in stone, appeared overly thick. A garden with overgrown plants on the north side concealed the rockery and the main building. Upon reaching the top of the building, it offered a wide view, prompting the desire to share this unique perspective with more people.

The first and semi-underground stories of the original building were preserved, utilizing the original concrete frame and shear walls to resist side thrust. The above-ground columns were cut out and replaced with spindle steel structure columns, using ball hinge joints at the bottom to reduce the section size of the structure. The original roof was replaced with a T-shaped steel structure, with small steel pipes between the beams to ensure stability. Landscape platforms at various elevations provide a multi-level view of the landscape.

To highlight the new bridge’s lightness and the site’s history, texture coating replaced the original stone surface on the walls. Polished aluminum plates were chosen for the new addition to reflect seasonal changes. Weeds were cleared, and a series of viewing platforms were added, reserving growth space for plants and integrating the rockery with the platforms.

The Low Carbon Bridge, located in the middle of the artificial lake south of Jianshi Station, underwent significant changes to improve comfort and safety. The original bridge was lengthened, and the steps were made gentler. Polished aluminum plates were used to achieve a “Chinese traditional mortise and tenon structure.” Flower boxes and night lights were added to the plates, creating a modern Jiangnan characteristic on the facade.

The Tingyun Station was reconstructed from Rongzhai, comprising two main parts: a double-height space on the west side and a landscape building on the east side. Due to the terrain, the interior space was relatively private, and there was a lack of seating on the steps. This renovation aimed to enhance the architectural image while providing a diverse and comfortable public space.

The west courtyard space was expanded, and a new roof was added to create a semi-outdoor activity space. In the east part, the main structure was preserved, and landscape steps and floor slabs were removed to form a lighting courtyard, improving indoor lighting and creating different courtyards. Metal structures were attached to the existing walls to achieve a light construction effect.
