SKY BOWL / SOPA

SKY BOWL is a rooftop amphitheater atop Hisense Mall in Qingdao. Despite the mall’s prime location, its original impermeable architecture isolated it from the urban fabric. The architects proposed a pragmatic design approach, emphasizing programming and organization over mere shaping. This project aims to demonstrate how commercial buildings can incorporate cultural awareness and spirituality, creating a more inclusive and equitable urban environment.

The SKY BOWL extension stands as a pioneering example of urban renewal and innovation in commercial architecture. Initially tasked with designing a “glassed VIP lounge,” the architects shifted focus to making the mall’s stunning views accessible to all social classes.

The concept of an “amphitheater on top of a hall” was developed to promote inclusivity, cultural enrichment, and sustainability. The lightweight, transparent design minimizes the impact on the existing architecture while enhancing the relationship between the structure and its urban surroundings.

The project’s design philosophy highlights the importance of programming and organization in achieving true innovation. By utilizing the differences in altitude, natural light was introduced into previously dark and uninviting areas, transforming them into welcoming, luminous spaces. This approach underscores the architects’ commitment to creating a more equitable and inclusive urban environment, prioritizing quality, equality, and cultural vitality.

SKY BOWL also redefines the connection between department stores and brands. It establishes a distinct cultural identity that fosters cohesion in the often chaotic retail environment. As a symbol of time and transformation, SKY BOWL enhances the mall’s character while serving as a catalyst for socialization and community activities.

The project addresses a critical issues in contemporary architecture: creating inclusive spaces within commercial buildings. It offers a cost-effective, efficient, and inclusive solution, solving the disconnect between high-end retail spaces and their urban context. The accessible, well-lit space benefits users, providing a warm and welcoming environment.

Compared to similar projects, SKY BOWL stands out due to its focus on inclusivity, cultural awareness, sustainability, and innovative reorganization of spaces and function. It gives Hisense Mall a distinct identity and offers a clear cultural framework for brands, setting it apart from typical department store renovations.
