Showan Apartment Renovation, by Pragmatica Architectural Design Studio, is a residential project in Tehran, Iran. The 200-square-meter penthouse on the 6th floor features a 5.20-meter high, open space, surrounded by a 400-square-meter terrace. The ground floor includes a living and dining room, master bedroom, kitchen, and maid’s room, with the terrace divided into public and private areas. The mezzanine offers flexible spaces like a game room, library, living room, and guest room. The design creates a duality between the bright, functional lower area and the whimsical, rough upper area. Key elements, like white ceilings and a two-story fireplace, blur boundaries, enhancing the living experience.
The Showan penthouse is situated on the 6th floor of a classic building in northern Tehran. It features a 200-square-meter, square-shaped plan with a height of 5.20 meters, entirely fluid and undivided, surrounded by a 400-square-meter terrace.
The ground floor includes a living and dining room, master bedroom, kitchen, and maid’s room. The terrace on this level is divided into two sections: one that interacts with public spaces, featuring a firepit, barbecue, and gathering area, and another that connects to private spaces, containing a playground and jacuzzi. The mezzanine level offers flexible spaces such as a game room, library, living room, and guest room, adaptable to the users’ needs.
The approach to the existing context, characterized by its integrated space, involves defining a hypothetical level line (datum) determined by the standard height of a residential space. This creates a “duality” between the upper and lower areas. Below this imaginary line, the space is designed to meet all necessary standards for residential living, aligning with residential space concepts. The lower zone realizes a living space that meets functional needs while challenging conventional notions of such a space. It features a bright, transparent area with a soft, simple, white texture. Above the line, however, a floating, whimsical space is created, characterized by an indefinite and flexible plan at a lower height, with less brightness and a rough, exposed appearance.
Designing elements like white ceilings, a two-story fireplace, and a double-height glass bedroom are playful decisions intended to blur the boundaries between areas and soften their separation, thereby connecting the two spaces. As a result, the living space satisfies the user’s needs and concerns while creating additional experiential value.
