Shelter for Gardeners is a community space designed by Esnard Sanz Architectes in Villenave-d’Ornon, France. Completed in 2023, it offers a versatile environment for gardeners. Positioned within an existing grove, it provides natural shade and protection, facilitating various activities. The structure emphasizes simplicity and utility, featuring laminated concrete, a wooden frame, and polycarbonate sheets, creating a functional and transparent space for the gardening community.

The architects describe the project as a space for gardeners at the center of a large allotment garden area. The building integrates seamlessly with the existing grove, preserving the trees and providing natural shade. This environment fosters diverse activities and connects the indoor and outdoor spaces.

The project’s essence is to creates an architecture based on fundamental needs: shelter, shadow, light, structure, and materiality. The design aims to offer protection from wind, sun, and rain, encouraging community interaction among gardeners.

The structure includes a laminated concrete wall with water points, reminiscent of traditional regional washhouses. A wooden frame with a light cover support rainwater collection for garden irrigation. Polycarbonate sheets set in steel frames form the enclosure, shielding the space from wind while filtering light and views.

The design of these elements is intended to be transparent and understandable for users. The exposed structural assemblies highlight the building’s construction details, promoting a holistic understanding of the architecture.
