Salle Polyvalente de Plumergat, a multipurpose room designed by Studio 02 in Plumergat, France, reinterprets traditional architectural principles by appearing as if it were sculpted from the terrain. Completed in 2014, the project features a luminous, weightless structure made from white concrete, with a symbolic metallic canvas by Joran Briand adding decorative elements.
This design challenges conventional architectural norms, which typically involve adding materials to a site. Instead, this building creates the impression of having been formed through subtraction of reduction, as if carved directly from the landscape.
Much like a stonemason envisions the granite block before carving, the initial rectangular volume seems to have been carved, hollowed, twisted, flattened, and sharpened to achieve its most precise form.
The treatment of the soil and foundation is crucial here. The volume is set in relation to the natural terrain level, ensuring the room blends with the horizon of nearby buildings while offering ground-level access to the garden below. This focus on ease of circulation extends to the main stage design, with handicap accessibility integrated through a series of internal ramps.
White concrete is the dominant material in this project, creating a luminous effect that amplifies the structure’s weightless angles and volumes. To adorn the high-volume sides, designer Joran Briand crafted a metallic canvas featuring the ermine, a symbol of the UK.
