Verdelago Resort, a luxury hospitality project designed by S+A Architects in Portugal’s Algarve region, marks a milestone in sustainable tourism with its first phase completion. The project features condos, villas, and townhouses designed to harmonize with the natural landscape and incorporates Portuguese taipas, a traditional construction method. Powered by renewable energy and supported by water conservation systems, Verdelago sets a new standard for eco-conscious luxury. Recognized with major real estate awards in 2024, the resort highlights Portugal’s dedication to innovative, sustainable design.
S+A Architects (Saraiva + Associados) has completed the first phase of Verdelago Resort, a luxury hospitality development on Portugal’s Algarve coast near the border with Spain. This milestone introduces a collection of condos, villas, and townhouses that prioritize sustainability and seamlessly integrate with the coastal environment. As the first resort in Portugal to receive Green Globe Certification, Verdelago establishes itself as a leader in sustainable tourism.
Renowned for their focus on sustainability, S+A Architects delivered a design that pays homage to the region’s traditional seaside villages. The architectural approach employs intersecting forms and peaked rooflines, evoking heritage construction styles. Residences are equipped with rooftop patios offering 360-degree views of the rugged coastal landscape. Sunlight is modulated using structural trusses, while architectural screens provide shade, contributing to an overall balance of aesthetic appeal and functionality. Meandering pathways and lookout towers connect the properties, allowing residents and visitors to explore the natural surroundings and easily access the beach.
A defining feature of Verdelago Resort is its incorporation of Portuguese taipas, a traditional building method that has been adapted for modern needs. This technique involves compacting natural materials such as earth, clay, and gravel to create thick, thermally efficient walls. Historically used in southern Portugal, taipas offer excellent insulation and a low carbon footprint. By integrating this time-honored practice, S+A Architects achieved a design that is both contemporary and environmentally responsible.
The resort’s commitment to sustainability extends to energy and water management. A photovoltaic energy plant generates a surplus of renewable energy, enabling the development to operate efficiently and sustainably. Additional measures, including rainwater harvesting, wastewater recycling, and the use of native landscaping, reduce irrigation needs and enhance resource conservation. These features ensure that Verdelago supports an environmentally conscious lifestyle while maintaining luxury standards.
Verdelago Resort’s groundbreaking approach has earned it significant accolades, including the Portuguese National Prize for Innovation in Real Estate and the National Real Estate Award in 2024. This development represents S+A Architects’ vision for combining high-end hospitality with sustainable practices, setting a benchmark for future projects in Portugal and internationally.
