Palmyra House, designed by Studio Mumbai and situated in Alibagh, Maharashtra, offers a tranquil retreat approximately 95 kilometers from Mumbai. Completed in 2007, this 3,000 ft² residence is nestled within a functioning coconut plantation and consists of two wooden louvered structures resting on stone platforms. These structures integrate seamlessly with the landscape’s existing wells and aqueducts, emphasizing a cohesive living environment. The north volume houses the living room, study, and master bedroom, while the south volume contains the kitchen, dining area, and guest bedrooms. A centrally located pool provides a unique swimming channel, offering expansive views of the sea to the west and dense palm foliage to the east, creating a serene escape from urban life.
The house’s structural framework is crafted from ain wood, a local hardwood, using traditional interlocking joinery. The extensive louvers are made from the outer part of the palmyra trunk, a locally sourced palm species. Exterior details include hand-worked copper flashing and standing seam aluminum roofs, while interiors feature teakwood and India Patent Stone, a refined pigmented plaster. Black basalt, quarried locally, is used for the stone plinths, aqueduct walls, and pool plazas.
