Ninth Coffee Shop, designed by STUDIO FSJ, is situated on the ground floor of Shanghai Changfeng Joy City, occupying a corner of the outdoor atrium. The café’s unique urban atmosphere is shaped by its all-outdoor climate, square hall, and street neighborhood feel. The design focuses on creating a central “anchor” in the form of a kiosk that serves as both a visual focal point and a functional hub, opening up in all directions to engage pedestrians.

The all-outdoor climate, square hall, and street neighborhood feel contribute to the café’s unique urban atmosphere. The design begins with an “anchor”: the Kiosk. This small pavilion-like structure opens in all directions, catching the eyes of pedestrians from any direction and acting as a center for trading and communication.

Contrary to traditional café settings where the counter is inside, this design places it at the forefront, allowing the public to closely observe the coffee-making process. Two entries surround the kiosk, making it an island that people can stop at or pass by from both sides.

The Kiosk’s presence extends into the store’s interior through a continuous, cave-like terrazzo structure that defines various functional spaces: the coffee-making area, cashier, storage, and dining area.

This structure, resembling an excavated stone, grows out from the interior, bends near the center of the plot, and ends at the outermost corner. The space created by the terrazzo structure offers a diagonal view contact within the regular plot line.

In contrast to the weighty stone, the rest of the façade is light, with translucent glass and structural elements. Along the long façade, a leaf-shaped seating area curls inward, gently embracing passers-by.

Warm cherry wood rods reduce the large scale of the façade to a more intimate human scale, creating an open yet cozy space. By activating some areas within the red line and enhancing the interaction between inside and outside, the passage feel of the mall corridor is weakened.
