Marian. Family House in Ullastrell, designed by Carles Marcos, is situated on the southeast slope of Ullastrell, near Barcelona. The house preserves an old concrete mass wall as its base and is designed to be comfortable, economical, and expandable. Built with load-bearing walls, the house features rooms arranged parallel to the street and offers longitudinal and transverse permeability for sunlight, ventilation, and views. The main rooms are small interconnected spaces, and the exterior is shaped by the house’s position and its relationship with the existing wall.
The house is located on the southeast slope of Ullastrell, a quiet village about 45 minutes from Barcelona. An old concrete mass wall supports the inclined terrain, which rises 4 meters above the street. This wall was preserved and reinterpreted as a plinth for the new building, becoming the base upon which the house sits. Designed for a couple, the house needed to be comfortable, economical, and expandable in the future. The rooms are juxtaposed parallel to the street, minimizing the footprint on the ground.
Built with load-bearing walls, the house extends in two directions. Longitudinally, the sequence of rooms blurs the general boundaries of the interior space, highlighted by the continuous structural rhythm of the unidirectional slab. Transversely, the design ensures maximum permeability from outside through each domestic space, allowing sunlight, cross ventilation, and constant visual connection with the environment.
The main rooms are conceived as a sum of small spaces, each complemented by areas of size and proportion suitable for its use. The exterior space, partially inclined, is shaped by the house’s position on the ground and its relationship with the large existing wall.
