The remodeling of an old stone house in western France, designed by Kawahara Krause Architects, has transformed the residence into a spacious, character-preserving home. Built in 1850, the house and its annexes form a courtyard that leads to a garden. The renovation removed all interior walls, creating a large open space on the ground floor with shelves for storage. Symmetry and solid stone exterior walls define the new space. The project also includes winter gardens that serve as transitional spaces, featuring a diagonal wooden lattice structure echoed in the garden’s pergola.

All interior walls were removed to create a single large, open space on the ground floor. Shelves along the outer walls offer storage and emphasize the room’s characteristics. The space now features symmetry with an entrance door and four windows on each side, facing both the courtyard and the garden, highlighted by the solid stone exterior walls. A shelving unit along the wooden staircase introduces open zoning. On the upper floor, built-in wardrobes and shelves form a new room structure.

The clients’ desire for winter gardens on both sides of the house evolved into a spatial sequence. The first winter garden serves as an entrance between the courtyard and the large living space, while the second winter garden transitions to the open garden. Both winter gardens feature a diagonal wooden lattice structure, also used for a pergola framing a “green room” in the garden, creating a spatial counterpart to the courtyard.
