Maison Brummell Majorelle, a boutique hotel designed by Bergendy Cooke in Marrakech, combines contemporary design with local vernacular elements. Completed in 2023, the project incorporates lush vegetation and running water, creating an oasis-like atmosphere. The exterior features various plaster finishes, handmade tiles, and terrazzo, highlighted by brass transitions. Interiors boast sculptural forms with carved voids, providing dynamic spatial experiences through light and shadow. Private gardens and public spaces enhance the urban oasis concept, blending modern design with the site’s historical texture.
In Marrakech, a new boutique hotel offers a fresh take on local architectural traditions. The design incorporates playful contemporary elements while preserving a textural connection to the site’s rich history. Lush vegetation and varying volumes of running water enhance the feeling of an oasis.
Architects began with a sculptural solid mass, carving specific incisions and voids of different scales. This technique provides varied spatial experiences through changes in light, shadow, and scale. The surrounding gardens reflect this approach, harmonizing with the overall design.
Private gardens for guests are formed by different levels of planting, adding dynamic foliage that contrasts with the building’s sculptural form. This integration accentuates the urban oasis concept, offering a tranquil retreat within the city.
Maison Brummell Majorelle’s exterior features an array of plaster finishes, handmade tiles, and local terrazzo, particularly in the public areas such as the entrance wall that establishes the hotel’s street presence. Brass details mark the transitions between different areas, guiding guests from the street to the hotel and from public to private spaces.
