Maison Bordeaux le Pecq, located in Bois-le-Roy, Normandy, is a modernist masterpiece designed by Claude Parent between 1963 and 1965. The house embodies Parent’s “fonction oblique” theory, featuring ramps, slopes, and a distinctive sloping pagoda-like roof. Originally created as a countryside studio for art patron Andree Bordeaux Le Pecq, the largely concrete structure includes expansive open spaces, a mezzanine study/library, and various other facilities. This iconic home remains a significant example of 20th-century modernist architecture.
The Maison Bordeaux le Pecq is located in Bois-le-Roy, a village in Normandy. Built by architect Claude Parent between 1963 and 1965, this house is a striking example of modernist architecture. It showcases Parent’s theory of the “fonction oblique,” which emphasizes ramps, slopes, angles, and minimal walls, allowing space to predominate over the surface. The house’s sloping pagoda-like roof is a testament to this theory.
Parent created the house for art patron Andree Bordeaux Le Pecq, who wanted it as her countryside studio and designed most of the interior herself. This building stands as a remarkable piece of 20th-century architecture with strong architectural and heritage value.
Inside, the largely concrete home consists almost entirely of one large open space, with a small kitchen, bathrooms, and bedrooms branching off it. The giant wave-like gestures of the roof create one of residential architecture’s great rooms. The single-story house offers a majestic reception area that opens onto a terrace, a dining room, and a lounge with a fireplace.
The mezzanine above houses a study/library. The rest of the house includes a master suite with a bathroom and dressing room, three additional bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, a pantry, and a storeroom. An outbuilding, a double garage, and a converted basement complete the property.
Maison Bordeaux le Pecq, a testament to Claude Parent’s visionary design, remains an iconic example of modernist architecture.
