Logan Pavilion, designed by CLB Architects and located on a sagebrush plain north of Jackson, Wyoming, serves as the family home of Eric Logan, a Partner at the firm. Originally constructed in 1997 under a demanding four-month schedule with a limited budget, the house has undergone significant evolution to meet the changing needs of Logan’s family, including his wife, their two college-age daughters, and their pets. Inspired by vernacular hay sheds, the design incorporates materials like cedar and rusted steel that blend with the natural landscape. A 2020 remodel brought updates including a metal roof, new exterior finishes, and a kitchen renovation, enhancing both functionality and aesthetics while optimizing natural light and cross-ventilation, strengthening its connection to its Western surroundings.
The design of Logan Pavilion draws inspiration from traditional hay sheds, featuring a gabled roof supported by tall columns that symbolize shelter on the expansive plains. The exterior materials, including cedar shingles, siding, decking, and rusted sheet steel, were chosen for their durability and ability to blend naturally with the surrounding landscape as they weather over time. The interior features economical materials such as oiled masonite wall paneling, raw MDF cabinetry, and oiled concrete floors, which contribute to a contemporary and understated aesthetic.
In 2001, a guest house was added to the property, offering additional space for visitors and a separate area for yoga and workouts. The property further expanded with the construction of a garage and an eventual addition to house Logan’s collections of cars, bikes, motorcycles, tools, and vinyl records. These structures were constructed with oxidized steel, selected for its capacity to rust and harmonize with the environment.
A major remodel in 2020 brought significant updates to the home, including a kitchen renovation, a transition from a shingle roof to a metal one, and new decking, siding, and stain. The installation of the metal roof fulfilled the original design vision, which had initially faced opposition from the neighborhood design review but was ultimately approved in 2020. The exterior stain, originally chosen to give the house a weathered-barn appearance, was updated during the remodel for a more refined look.
Logan Pavilion was designed to maximize natural light, cross-ventilation, and views of the Teton Mountains. The harsh weather conditions in the region necessitated a robust structure, with deep overhangs protecting it from the elements. Over the years, the family has enhanced the landscape with additional plants and trees, improving the local ecosystem by offering shade and creating habitats for wildlife.
Eric Logan describes the latest version of Logan Pavilion as the “new black sweater,” reflecting the home’s enduring simplicity and its ability to evolve while maintaining its timeless design.
