MAD Architects’ “Living Garden,” showcased at the 2018 China House Vision Exhibition in Beijing, reimagines the home of the future by blending interior and exterior spaces. Designed with Hanergy, the home features a curved, floating roof with translucent, waterproof glass for natural ventilation and sunlight. Solar panels provide enough power for a family of three. The design fosters an open, natural environment, emphasizing humanity’s connection with nature. The exhibition, curated by Kenya Hara, featured 10 international architecture firms and innovative companies collaborating on 1:1 scale pavilions to explore future living possibilities in China.
MAD Architects, led by Ma Yansong, introduced their model for the “home of the future” at the 2018 China House Vision Exhibition. In partnership with Hanergy, “Living Garden” breaks down the boundaries between interior and exterior, creating the feeling of living in nature.
Defying traditional home concepts, MAD’s design envisions an “en-plein-air” atmosphere. A curved, floating roof slopes downwards, featuring a grid-like structure layered with translucent, waterproof glass that protects the interior from rain, provides natural ventilation, and allows sunlight to flood in. Hanergy solar panels are strategically placed above, and angled to harness maximum sunlight to power the home. Collectively, they generate enough electricity to meet the daily needs of a family of three. The design maintains openness towards the sky and surroundings, blending life, solar energy, and nature to create a living landscape that emphasizes humanity’s emotional connection with nature.
The 2018 China House Vision Exhibition brought together 10 international architecture firms and 10 innovative companies to create their vision of the “home of the future” in 1:1 scale pavilions. Initiated by Japanese graphic designer and curator Kenya Hara, House Vision is a cultural research project using the “home” to explore future living possibilities. The 2018 exhibition, the first abroad, showcased 10 diverse living environments addressing future living in China through cross-disciplinary collaboration in architecture, design, technology, and manufacturing.
