KIGA kindergarten, designed by AllesWirdGut Architektur in Arlberg, Austria, enhances the interaction between interior and exterior spaces. Completed in 2007, this 625 m² building integrates its surroundings with wall-sized windows and covered courtyards.

The compact KIGA building is situated in the upper north area of the plot. Its main single-story height rises into a second-floor annex at the north corner, matching the surrounding building heights and covering the entrance area. Adjacent to this entrance, a parking lot doubles as a front yard, extending through the foyer and continuing as a covered playground towards the main garden.

The building’s main axis starts at the foyer, supplying classrooms and common facilities situated along both sides while also providing distribution space and cloakrooms. Surrounding rooms can optionally connect to this axis, adding vibrancy and converting the corridor space into an inhabitable area. The classrooms all face southeast.

Wall-sized windows enhance the impression of being part of the exterior green spaces. Two covered courtyards cut through the building, creating large openings. These courtyards separate the classrooms and connect the assembly hall in the southwest to the large park in the southeast. The assembly hall transitions from the ground level to the elevated annex in the north. The stairway in the assembly hall serves as a stage or stands for various activities in the common space. From the office space in the annex, nurses can monitor the entrance area and keep an eye on the children in the lower assembly hall.
