KAAN River Kwai Restaurant designed by PHTAA in Tha Ma Kham, Thailand enhances the natural beauty of the Kwai Yai River while integrating with local activities and traditions. Completed in 2024, this 800 m² project utilizes retaining walls to manage the land-river elevation difference and prevent erosion. Local materials, like honey-colored river gravel, ensure durability and blend with the surroundings. The design features a low roofline and translucent materials for natural light, with a balcony offering views of the river and the Bridge over the River Kwai. Repurposed elements from the original building create a sense of continuity.
KAAN River Kwai Restaurant is a project by PHTAA located in Tha Ma Kham, Thailand. The design connects to the Kwai Yai River, prioritizing the preservation of the waterfront’s natural scenery. The restaurant is intended to be a point of interest, linking appropriately with local activities and creating jobs for the local community.
Retaining walls play a crucial role in this design. The 3-meter elevation difference between the land and the river makes these walls essential for preventing riverbank erosion and supporting the building’s weight.
A riverbank area at the water level serves as a pier, raft dock, and space for outdoor activities, maintaining local traditions. Using local materials like honey-colored river gravel for the retaining walls ensures durability and harmony with the environment. This gravel, mined in Kanchanaburi Province, is resistant to water penetration and blends with the natural surroundings.
The building’s design features a roof lower than the surrounding tree line to blend with the context. The balcony extends from the roofline, providing a dining and observation area with views of the Kwai Yai River and the Bridge over the River Kwai. Translucent roofing materials maximize natural light, while slats control heat. The main structure uses steel and locally sourced wood. Elements from the original building, such as wooden pillars, were repurposed to create a commemorative entrance.
