The Joe & Rika Masueto Library, designed by Murphy/Jahn in Chicago, offers an innovative approach to book storage through its Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS), capable of housing 3.5 million volumes. Completed in 2011, the library features a minimalistic elliptical glass dome above ground, while the books are stored underground to maintain optimal temperature and humidity. This design aligns with the University of Chicago’s mission of advancing knowledge and reflects the concept of a future-oriented library by focusing on comfort, sustainability, and seamless interior integration.
Located centrally within the University of Chicago campus, the Joe & Rika Mansueto Library is surrounded by a diverse array of architectural styles. These include the Gothic quadrangle to the south, the Limestone Brutalism of Netsch’s Regenstein Library to the east, and Legorreta’s vibrant Student Housing to the north. To the west, an existing building is slated for replacement by a new Science Building. This varied architectural context offered limited opportunities for direct stylistic connections in the design of the library.
The design challenge was to accommodate 3.5 million books using an Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS). The project brief initially suggested housing these books in an above-ground structure. However, to preserve open space, enhance the Reading Room and Preservation Department, and in line with their unconventional design approach, the architects decide to store the books underground. This placement allows for better control of temperature and humidity, maintaining a constant environment of 60°F (16°C) and 30% RH at a lower cost. The people-oriented spaces are housed within a minimal elliptical glass dome at grade, which integrates harmoniously into the campus setting by defying traditional design norms.
Murphy/Jahn noted that the University of Chicago embraced the design as it aligns with institution’s mission as a leader in advancing knowledge. Despite the absence of architecture and engineering disciplines, the University fosters a spirit of pushing beyond conventional limits in science, physics, and the arts.
After finalizing the design, the focus shifted to addressing issues such as comfort, sustainability, light control, structure, life safety, operation, and maintenance.
The structural grid-shell of 120 x 240 feet (37 x 73 meters), coupled with insulated glazing, offers a minimal yet effective system for balancing exterior and interior conditions.
Inside, there is a seamless integrating of lighting, air supply, and furnishings, all crafted from solid European White Oak.
The environment is designed to be pleasant and conducive to study and research, signaling a shift towards the library of the future.
