The IZB Residence, an eight-story hotel designed by Stark Architekten at Campus Martinsried, Germany, stands as a landmark with its distinct architectural language, characterized by organic shapes and a dynamic flow. Completed in 2014, the building offers 42 rooms, including suites, catering to international researchers and business travelers. The design skillfully balances tension between floating, organic forms and dynamic architecture, while promoting harmony and well-being. The residence features a striking white aluminum facade, innovative interiors, and a seventh-floor faculty club offering panoramic views of the Bavarian Alps.
The hotel, positioned as a standalone structure within the Innovation Center for Biotechnology, integrates with its surroundings by completing the existing square on its first two floors, establishing an urban character. The unitized facade, enhanced by an additional white aluminum skin, eliminates the need for external blinds through the use of solar control glass and decentralized air conditioning. Curtains and binds allow for individual adjustments in each room. The floating, curved exterior skin creates a pronounced three-dimensional effect, with the depth and layout of the facade cutouts contributing to a sense of comfort within the rooms.
The dynamic design of the facade extends into the interior, where it serves as a multifunctional feature, integrating elements such as a desk, lounger, and dressing table in each room. The open bathroom design enhances the sense of spaciousness, and the combination of high-end technical features and design transforms each room into a comfortable space suitable for communication, business, or relaxation.
The ground floor offers engaging views between the restaurant, lobby, and surrounding environment, with an innovative lighting system that enhances the atmosphere. The interplay between smaller and larger spaces creates a feeling of tension, while the flowing layout connects different functional areas, fostering a sense of well-being in the open space.
A sophisticated color scheme, ranging form black to grey in the basement to brilliant white in the top-floor faculty club, contributes to an elegant ambiance. The mix of extravagant architecture, modern interiors, and innovative lighting design creates an inviting atmosphere that encourages communication. The first floor also includes a gym for guests.
The faculty club on the seventh floor, featuring floor-to-ceiling glazing, is the building’s highlight. The exclusive 170m² clubroom includes a golden metal bar, cozy sofas for intimate conversations, a private dining area, and club chairs near a fireplace. The adjoining terrace offers breathtaking views of the Bavarian Alps.
The IZB Residence is uniquely designed to provide an inspiring atmosphere for guest, particularly those from international elite research backgrounds visiting Campus Martinsried. The hotel features 42 rooms, including six suites and twelve junior suites, catering to scientists and business travelers from around the world.
