How would you describe your design philosophy?
At JLL, our design philosophy revolves around creating spaces that are functional, innovative, and sustainable. We incorporate cutting-edge technologies and design trends while respecting the cultural, local, and environmental context of each project.
Can you tell us about your favorite project and why it stands out?
One of our favorite projects is the JLL Melbourne Office. The standout feature is the thoughtful integration of diverse workspaces, natural light, and modern aesthetics, with a focus on sustainability. We designed this space in response to the local environment and JLL’s people, ensuring a balance between functionality and innovation. Being able to experience the space ourselves has allowed us to see that it is being used exactly as envisioned.
What is your favorite architectural detail?
One detail we’re particularly proud of is the incorporation of neurodiverse library spaces within our offices. These quiet, respite areas, located strategically on each floor, offer employees a calm sanctuary away from the dynamic, open workspaces.
Do you have a favorite material?
Our team values materials that marry sustainability, durability, and aesthetics. Our Melbourne office fit-out is pursuing WELL Platinum certification and 6 Star Green Star accreditation, which demonstrates our commitment to responsible material selection.
What is your process for starting a new project?
We start every project by listening closely to our clients to understand their needs, goals, and vision. Through in-depth site research, client consultations, and collaborative brainstorming, we craft innovative designs that not only meet objectives but also tell a compelling story throughout the project.
How do you balance creativity and practicality in your designs?
Balancing creativity and practicality is key to our design approach. Through regular team discussions during all design phases, we challenge ideas, assess feasibility, and ensure innovative solutions are grounded in practicality without compromising creative vision.
What role does the surrounding environment play in your architectural projects?
The surrounding environment is a crucial element in shaping our designs. In our Melbourne office project, we drew inspiration from the city’s unique ‘Hoddle Grid’ and the contrasting aesthetics of Collins Street’s elegance and Flinders Lane’s vibrant, graffiti-filled laneways. This narrative was woven into the design, creating a space that embraces Melbourne’s cultural and historical context.
How do you approach working with clients to understand their needs and visions?
We collaborate with clients through extensive consultations, workshops, and presentations. This allows us to align our design with their vision, ensuring that the outcome meets their expectations and serves their needs.
What architectural trends or movements do you find most inspiring?
We’re inspired by the growing emphasis on sustainable design, smart technologies, and user-centric approaches. Trends like biophilic design and adaptive reuse are also key influences, helping us create spaces that are not only functional but deeply connected to the environment and the people who use them.
What advice would you give to aspiring architects?
To aspiring architects, we’d advise maintaining curiosity, being open to feedback, and always striving for excellence. Understanding the social, cultural, and environmental impacts of design is crucial. Collaborate, build a strong network, and remain passionate about creating meaningful, enduring spaces.
