The Beijing Winter Olympics “Ice Lattice” · Huaxi LIVE Ice Center, located in Wukesong, Beijing, was designed by the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design (BIAD) and completed in 2021. This 38,960㎡ venue integrates two adaptable ice rinks with ultra-low energy systems, blending functionality with urban vitality. It is a professional training site, Olympic landmark, and year-round sports, culture, and commerce hub.

The Huaxi LIVE Wukesong Ice Center exemplifies a seamless transformation from a dedicated Olympic venue to a vibrant commercial hub, integrating harmoniously with the urban fabric of the Wukesong district and the western stretch of Chang’an Avenue. By night, its illuminated facade resembles sparkling ice crystals, establishing an iconic presence within the cityscape.

Situated at the southeast corner of the Huaxi LIVE complex, the Ice Center occupies a total area of 38,960 square meters, with 16,400 square meters above ground and 22,560 square meters below. It includes two standard 30×61 meter ice rinks. The northern rink is equipped with 1,703 spectator seats and features a layout adaptable to various events, while the southern rink accommodates 204 seats, primarily for training purposes. This design not only supports professional ice sports but also allows versatile use, adding commercial and cultural value to the district.

Functional adaptability is integral to the Ice Center’s design. Movable wall panels facilitate the reconfiguration of spaces like dressing rooms, while advanced ventilation systems and rubber flooring in player and referee zones enhance efficiency and usability. Modern materials, including aluminum panels and back-painted glass, ensure durability and minimal maintenance, while a vibrant color scheme inspired by the youthful energy of Huaxi LIVE amplifies the venue’s dynamic character. A comprehensive wayfinding system further enhances the user experience, aligning practicality with aesthetic cohesion.

Since opening to the public in June 2022, the Ice Center has provided spaces for ice sports, cultural exchanges, and commercial events, solidifying its role as a hub for year-round activity. As the largest passive ultra-low energy sports building in its category, it incorporates smart technologies that streamline operations and enhance user convenience. Beyond its function as a training site for the Winter Olympics, the Huaxi LIVE Wukesong Ice Center has become a landmark for Beijing, fostering public enthusiasm for ice sports and reinvigorating the surrounding cultural and commercial environment.

By integrating its Olympic legacy with modern urban needs, the Ice Center stands as a symbol of architectural innovation, cultural vitality, and sustainable development.
