House on Pali Hill, designed by Studio Mumbai, is located on a narrow site in Mumbai. The original structure was stripped down to its concrete frame as part of a transformation completed in 2012. This renovation involved adding a new floor and terrace, enveloping the house in layers of glass, wooden screens, planted trellises, and curtains to create varying degrees of privacy in an urban setting. The re-programming of the house allows it to integrate seamlessly with the surrounding trees, offering a nuanced interaction between the indoor spaces and the natural environment, reflecting a thoughtful blend of openness and privacy.
The entrance gallery leads to a double-height living space that opens onto a timber deck and public garden. The polished limestone floor gently reflects the landscape, while pigmented lime plaster walls absorb light softly.
The house features a series of floating staircase, staggered in flight and orientation, opening onto transitional spaces on each level. These areas offer opportunities for pause and chance encounters.
On the first floor, light enters the family room through a clerestory volume, casting a warm glow on the spacious area. A corridor leading to the bedrooms concludes with an intimate window seat, enhancing the home’s cozy atmosphere.
