House in Hausruck, a residential building designed by Moser und Hager Architekten in Austria, has undergone a thoughtful modernization to adapt to contemporary living and energy efficiency needs. Completed in 2022, this project focused on reactivating a vacant property as a retirement home, emphasizing barrier-free design and panoramic views of the Alpine foreland.
House in Hausruck, originally built in the 1950s and expanded in the 1980s, represents many aging properties requiring modernization to meet new living standards, demographic changes, and energy-saving measures.
The project prioritized reusing existing structural resources. Key interior elements, such as the tiled stove, were preserved. The exterior was reinterpreted to blend with the landscape, resulting in a flat, elongated structure parallel to the slope’s contour lines, featuring spacious, sheltered outdoor areas. The western part was extended, replacing the dilapidated structure with an age-appropriate lift and staircase. The living space is now centered on the upper floor, allowing for single-level living.
Most of the upper story’s exterior and interior walls were retained, with two exterior walls rebuilt using timber frame construction. Seventy-centimetre-high cross-laminated timber beams span the entire floor, replacing the old pitched roof. Fixed glazed skylights bring natural light and greenery into the living space. The beams on the south side cantilever out nearly four meters, creating a sheltered outdoor area usable year-round.
Additionally, a sauna house was constructed on the neighboring plot, connected by a walkway designed as a reversible steel structure.
