Horizon House, designed by Taylor Knights, is set on a steep site in Pascoe Vale. This project reimagines the typical suburban home by creating a floor plan that contrasts sharply with its sprawling context. The strategically placed building enables intimate engagement with the landscape while offering dynamic panoramic views.
Set on a steep site in Pascoe Vale, Horizon House reimagines the typical suburban home with a floor plan that sharply contrasts with its sprawling surroundings. The strategically placed structure allows the owners to engage intimately with the landscape while enjoying a dynamic panorama beyond.
The home is organized into two distinct zones. The ground floor is solid and private, housing two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a laundry. This monolithic lower form supports the floating first-floor living spaces above, with the negative space below providing a double carport.
The light-filled and transparent upper-level functions like a single-bedroom apartment, where eating, sleeping, and playing are all enjoyed. Large sliding doors create open and fluid spaces, offering versatility and adaptability. The northern view is intimate and seasonal, while the southern view is panoramic and expansive.
Owners are encouraged to engage with the landscape via a bridge connecting the first-floor living spaces to the upper garden plateau. On the southern side, the sharp and minimal detailing captures and frames the distant city skyline. A benchtop runs the full length of the building, acting as a datum line to screen the street below and ensure privacy.
