Helse Heuvels Park designed by YATTA Architectuur in Herent, Belgium has transformed a bland lawn into an inspiring natural playground for local children, completed in 2022. This project features a unique topography with sculpted hills and a multifunctional pavilion that enhances the park’s identity.
The municipality of Herent aimed to transform a plain lawn into an engaging natural playground for local children. Atelier Parkoer was appointed to design the landscape. Situated next to a stream that often flooded the area, part of the lawn was excavated to create a large wadi. The excavated soil was used to shape various hills, adding playful topography. The municipality needed storage space for camps and events in the new park, leading to YATTA Architectuur’s commission to design a small, practical pavilion.
The architects chose to position the pavilion centrally within the park, enhancing its presence and creating a distinctive site identity.
The pavilion features a continuous glass brick wall that illuminates the park at night, connected to street lighting. One side of the glass brick wall opens, providing access to a roof terrace, which offers views of the park. The structure is built from robust concrete, with storage access through large corrugated metal sliding doors.
The pavilion, with its shimmering glass bricks and robust concrete, successfully transformed the area into a lively park. The design team’s ambitions exceeded the functional requirements, creating a unique space that hosts various events, demonstrating that function sometimes follows form.
