The Grande Armée L1ve Office Building in Paris, redesigned by Baumschlager Eberle Architekten, skillfully transforms the former Peugeot headquarters into a cutting-edge office space. Completed in 2022, this project features a striking 110-meter-long facade that incorporates the existing modernist concrete structure designed by architect Sainsaulieu. The innovative window system includes alternating simple openings and box-type windows set at various depths, creating a facade characterized by rhythm, plasticity, and distinct order. This design enhances the building’s identity within the Parisian urban landscape and supports sustainability with its open office structure, green areas, and advanced recycling techniques. Awarded the Austrian Green Planet Building Award in 2024, the Grande Armée L1ve Office Building stands as a testament to sustainable development and architectural innovation.
The office building spans two courtyards from Avenue de la Grande Armée to Rue Pergolèse, incorporating an agora and conference center. The original primary structure was preserved, allowing for the creation of flexible, use-neutral office spaces. Generous green areas break up the perimeter block development, adding to the building’s appeal.
The project highlights the potential of recycling in construction. Of the 5,165 tons of demolished building fabric, 92% were recycled, with 80 tons repurposed within the building, such as for the gallery floor. The design avoided composite materials, instead utilizing simple materials like wood, various concretes, and metal, which can be reused with minimal reprocessing. Energy for the building is sourced from geothermal wells, photovoltaic panels on the roof, and, if necessary, local heating from Paris’s renewable energy grid.
Spanning 35,000 square meters gross floor area, the building reimagines the workspace into a more dynamic environment. It combines open office structure, former showrooms, and expansive open areas to create a space that extends beyond traditional desk work. Baumschlager Eberle Architekten expanded upon the groundwork laid by the original modernist design to meet contemporary and future needs. The project was recognized with Austrian Green Planet Building Award in 2024.
