Gardening Center designed by Architekti DRNH in Kroměříž, Czech Republic integrates new structures into the UNESCO-listed Chateau Gardens complex. Completed in 2012, the project replaces deteriorating 1970s buildings with a unified, farmyard-inspired facility. Using traditional carpentry and modern design, it harmonizes with the historical setting, enhancing the garden’s operations and visitor experience.
The Chateau Gardens complex, part of the Kroměříž Chateau, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The new gardening center replaces old, crumbling 1970s structures in the southwestern portion of the gardens.
The new facilities are smaller than the previous ones, allowing for the restoration of space to be used by garden visitors.
The design concept emulates a traditional farmyard, blending classic carpentry techniques with contemporary technology and design.
The complex consists of three simple structures surrounding a central courtyard, creating a unified space that complements the garden’s character. The western section houses a storage structure, while a garage for garden equipment stands opposite. The central structure is designated for garden workers.
The design considers the natural aging of materials, using oxidized and weathered wood to blend with the historic gardens. Traditional cast-iron lamps and original stone paving integrate the new buildings with the old chateau gardens.
The moderately insulated wooden employees’ station and uninsulated wooden garages and storage areas use a frame module of 3.3 meters, divided into thirds. Visible supporting elements feature classic carpentry construction with tenon and bolted joints. The insulated two-story section uses a frame construction braced with surface panels. Foundations include concrete strips and piles due to large-diameter sewage canals.
Twi single-level buildings have single-pitched roofs sloping to the rear, while the two-story building has a gable roof. Roofs are supported by wooden purlin systems.
Facades use vertical larch panels and fiber cement segments to meet flammability codes. The roofs are covered with seamed titanium zinc sheets.
