This unique structure, made of concrete and elevated above the ground, features inverted symmetrical volumes and a distinctive design that emphasizes both form and function.
Brutalist architecture, which emerged in the UK during the 1950s, is characterized by its emphasis on raw construction materials and structural components over decorative elements. This architectural style was a response to the need for reconstruction after World War II, focusing on functionality and efficiency. João Filgueiras Lima, known as Lelé, designed the Centro de Exposições da Bahia in 1974, exemplifying Brutalist architecture principles. The building, constructed entirely of apparent concrete molded in loco, is elevated five meters above the ground. Two identical side towers with four-meter cylindrical voids support the structure, housing stairs in one tower and an elevator in the other, ensuring stability. The rectangular plan measures 52 meters in length and 9 meters in width. The eastern side features an exhibition hall covered by a pyramidal roof with a skylight, creating a six-meter-high space ideal for exhibitions. The western side contains an amphitheater shaped like an inverted pyramid, providing seating for up to 50 people.
The building’s elevation, supported by two towers at the northern and southern ends, includes four slim masts extending from these towers for additional stability. An underground floor hosts technical and storage rooms, enhancing functionality. The design’s inverted symmetrical volumes and pyramid-like features characterize its unique architectural style.
Despite its unique design and architectural significance, the Centro de Exposições da Bahia has faced neglect and awaits renovation. The building remains a testament to João Filgueiras Lima’s innovative approach to architecture and his contributions to Brutalist design. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Lelé moved to Brasília after graduating and contributed to the city’s construction. His travels to the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, and Poland in the 1960s further enriched his understanding of architectural technologies, which he applied in his designs.
