In the verdant locale of Coimbatore, India, Bhutha Earthen Architecture Studio designed a 2800 ft² residence, completed in 2023, reflecting a commitment to sustainable and feasible living. The design harnesses traditional craftsmanship and environmental sensitivity, integrating the residence seamlessly with its forestry farm setting. The architecture employs natural materials like exposed brick, poured earth walls, and wooden elements, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality. A central courtyard, vital to the design, links the indoor and outdoor environments, optimizing natural light and fostering family interaction. The residence exemplifies a fusion of modern functionality with traditional elements, prioritizing environmental sustainability.
The earthen residence set within a forestry farm exemplifies a blend of environmental consciousness and traditional craftsmanship. The design by Bhutha Earthen Architecture Studio responded to the clients’ dedication to sustainable living, aiming to integrate the dwelling harmoniously with its natural surroundings and embody high sustainability standards. The architectural plan focuses on creating a symmetrical living space that fosters family interaction and connection with nature. The central courtyard acts as the core of the home, establishing a visual connection across all spaces, and enhancing the flow of natural light and air circulation.
The entrance introduces the home with wooden columns beneath a pitched roof, crafting a welcoming, traditional vibe. Inside, an integrated thinnai invites guests into a cozy living room, where the warmth of exposed brick and earth walls radiates. Terracotta floors and wooden accents underscore the natural decor, complemented by a traditional swing that serves as a relaxing focal point and links to the courtyard, easing access to the external environment.
The residence melds traditional architectural elements with contemporary needs, creating a sustainable setting conducive to connecting with nature. In the courtyard, stone pillars add a touch of enduring style, while Mangalore tiles provide shade and charm. Large eastern openings in the living area enhance the connection to the exterior sit-out, maintaining visual continuity throughout the spaces.
The courtyard extends to a double-height dining area, defined by textured rubble walls and accents, framing tranquil forest vistas through a wooden doorway. The expansive openings in the staircase area maximize light, enriching the residence’s ambiance. The master bedroom exudes rustic allure with its white lime plaster and exposed brick contrast, complemented by wooden storage solutions. The adjoining bathroom merges functionality with an aesthetic that invites nature indoors.
Further emphasizing the home’s character, the bedroom suite features teal green smooth lime plaster against rugged Kota stone floors, with plumbing fixtures in natural stone and brass enhancing durability and style. The kitchen and children’s room incorporate traditional motifs alongside modern functionality, with the upper floor hosting a traditional Mangalore-pitched roof and open terrace for relaxation and nature appreciation. Through passive design strategies and systems like solar and rainwater harvesting, the residence epitomizes sustainability, seamlessly integrating timeless aesthetics with contemporary environmental considerations.
