Belavali House, designed by Studio Mumbai and located on a five-acre rice plantation in Badlapur, Maharashtra, serves as a garden pavilion beautifully positioned between a forest to the east and terraced rice fields to the west. This home features undulating stone walls that anchor the structure strategically to harmonize with the natural landscape. The interior boasts pigmented cement plaster floors and operable facades that allow for an immersive experience of the surrounding environment. Additional farm-like buildings provide space for extended family and guests, maintaining the agricultural character of the landscape. The house’s functions are thoughtfully organized to correspond with the levels of the terraced paddy fields, with reclaimed stone decks and reconstructed walkways further integrating the natural and built environments.

The floors and walls are seamlessly finished in pigmented cement plaster, with a basic steel structure supporting a single roof plane. The house is enclosed by masonry walls, glass, wood, and timber louvers. Operable facades adjust to changing weather conditions, framing views of the surrounding garden and distant mountains. Separate farm-like buildings provide additional living and sleeping spaces for extended family and guests.

Each building’s footprint has been minimized to preserve the agricultural landscape. Large stone decks, made from reclaimed stone, have been created to offer habitable space within the open agrarian setting. The original walkways and walls used to traverse the fields have been reconstructed and expanded, integrating the natural and built environments.
