The Bathing Pier in Askim Bay, Gothenburg, designed by Manofactory, extends 260 meters into the sea, providing a unique bathing experience. Completed in 2014, the pier’s design features longitudinal bands serving various functions, such as shading, walking, sunbathing and accessibility for users with impaired mobility.
The Bathing Pier is located in Askim Bay, south of Gothenburg, known for its shallow, sandy beach. The pier extends 260 meters into the sea, where the depth allows diving. The pier points towards the Näset peninsula and serves as a significant concrete structure reaching into the sea.
The pier’s length is emphasized by its composition of longitudinal bands, resembling geometric waves. The first band includes shading structures and benches, the second is a wide, unobstructed walking lane, the third integrates sunbathing equipment, and the fourth comprises fully accessible ramps ending with seabed platforms for swimming.
The concrete surface of the pier displays the wood relief of the formwork. Equipment along the per is covered in larch wood, which will weather to match the concrete, enhancing visual continuity. Time plays a crucial role in the architecture’s perception.
