Bamboo Pavilion, designed by ZUO STUDIO in Taichung’s Fengyuan Huludun Park, reflects the city’s growth and sustainable development. Inspired by the Taichung World Flora Exposition theme, “Formosa Beauty of Taiwan,” the design resembles a seed sprouting from the earth, blending indoor and outdoor spaces with nature. Visitors experience the structure as a bamboo forest with views of the sky, fostering harmony with the environment. Made from locally sourced Moso and Makino bamboo, the pavilion combines traditional weaving and modern techniques, symbolizing sustainability and hope for a livable future.

Taichung, Taiwan’s second-largest and most livable city, continues to evolve as construction industries reshape its appearance and propel it forward in step with modern times. The Bamboo Pavilion, situated in the fourth area of Fengyuan Huludun Park, serves as an exhibition hall sponsored by the Taichung Real Estate Development Association.

As the Taichung Real Estate Development Association primarily consists of leading construction companies, the main objective was to integrate their core values with the Flora Exposition. This included emphasizing care for physical and mental health, commitment to social benefit, and innovative engineering, while showcasing the strengths and characteristics of Taiwan’s green building materials.

Aligned with the theme of the Taichung World Flora Exposition, “Formosa Beauty of Taiwan,” the design of the Bamboo Pavilion draws inspiration from the Central Mountain Range. Its form resembles a seed emerging from the ground, encircled by water. The design seamlessly connects indoor and outdoor spaces, fostering harmony with nature. Visitors experience the pavilion as if walking through a bamboo forest, enhancing their interaction with the environment. Looking upward, they can see the sky framed above the forest canopy.

The materials used in the Bamboo Pavilion are native Taiwanese species, with Moso bamboo and Makino bamboo from Nantou and Chiayi chosen as the primary options. Compared to traditional installations and bamboo art, these materials effectively demonstrate bamboo’s resilience and structural qualities in the design. By blending construction-scale elements with weaving techniques, the pavilion achieves a timeless space that embodies consistency and harmony.

When entering the space, visitors experience a serene atmosphere that reflects the harmony between architecture and nature. During its design and construction, a forward-looking vision was prioritized. The “Bamboo Pavilion” serves as a metaphor for architecture’s footprint, likened to a seed that has been sown and grown, symbolizing a hopeful future and the aspiration to create a more livable environment for the next generation.

The pavilion also aims to promote the use of sustainable building materials that harmonize with the environment while strengthening the connection between humans and nature.
