HK Architekten and Hermann Kaufmann + Partner ZT, unveiled a ground-breaking development in Bad Aibling, Germany, marked by sustainability and innovative use of materials in 2022. This mixed-use district features a car park predominantly constructed from renewable timber, integrating seamlessly into the natural landscape. The design combines functionality with aesthetic appeal, incorporating elements like a sculptural concrete ramp and a filigree steel staircase to contrast the wooden structure. This project not only addresses practical parking needs but also prioritizes environmental consciousness and user security, showcasing an advanced approach to modern architectural challenges.

A groundbreaking mixed-use district is taking shape in the northern part of Bad Aibling, Upper Bavaria. This development stands out as a pioneering project with its commitment to zero emissions and construction exclusively using renewable raw materials.

The centerpiece is a multi-story car park predominantly constructed from wood, featuring structural elements made of beech, glulam, and cross-laminated timber. It is architecturally integrated with the surrounding park through a translucent, two-story pavilion that runs alongside the main thoroughfare, harmonizing with the mature trees.

Challenging the conventional use of materials, a sculpturally designed concrete ramp and a delicate steel staircase provide stark contrasts. The integration of the mastic asphalt road surface extends indoors, providing a durable layer while slender wooden slats elegantly filter incoming light and ensure safety.

The architects have engineered an open, permeable structure that enhances brightness and a sense of security for users. “The design was envisioned to address the dynamic movements and dimensional changes of the wood structures, representing a high point in problem-solving,” reflects the design team.
