The Architectural Atelier designed by Artyem Slizunov and Edgar Martirosyan in London occupies a two-story attic in a 19th-century building. Completed in 2020, the project was carefully crafted to create a functional and comfortable workspace that not only preserves but also highlights the building’s historic architectural features. Solid oak was used extensively throughout the design to strengthen the building’s structure while ensuring ample natural light, which is essential for tasks like image processing and color correction. This thoughtful transformation balances modern functionality with the historic character of the building, maintaining the integrity of its 19th-century origins while serving contemporary needs.
The renovation was executed in two phases. Initially, the main workspaces were established, consisting of an open area and a main office furnished with a large desk and an audio system. A distinctive glass panel, connected to the floor and ceiling without additional profiles and using a thin layer of hemp felt, separates these spaces. Behind the office is a workshop dedicated to model making, while a small kitchen is discreetly positioned behind a wooden wall opposite the entrance. The attic floor serves as an archive, equipped with a worktable.
Solid oak was chosen as the primary material for the project, and it was utilized in the frames of the glass wall, floors, shelves, and custom-made desks. The architects intentionally selected wood with natural imperfections, such as cracks and knots, to align with the sophisticated spirit of the historic building and ensure durability.
The studio benefits from north-facing windows, providing diffuse, neutral light throughout the day. This natural lighting is crucial for image processing and color correction tasks. The combination of lighting, ample airflow, and the natural textures and colors of the materials used create an atmosphere conducive to thoughtful and meticulous work, enhancing the inherent value of the original space.
