700 Haus Trentham is a contemporary farmhouse designed by Glow Building Design, completed in 2015 in Trentham, Australia. The 253 m² house was built to handle high rainfall, maximize views, and provides comfort in a cold climate. Using local materials and tradespeople, the house is thermally efficient and designed to be off-grid, with its own water, power, and waste system. The design aligns with the clients’ lifestyle and will provide comfort and enjoyment for years to come.
The clients for 700 Haus Trentham approached Glow with a request to design a contemporary farmhouse that would be energy-efficient and take full advantage of its hillside farm location.
The house was designed to harmonize with the surrounding corrugated sheds while maintaining the comfort and warmth of a home. The design process involved testing ideas and receiving feedback from the clients. The key requirements included creating a home suited for high rainfall, maximizing views, ensuring comfort in cold conditions, and using local materials wherever possible.
The design aligned with various viewpoints on the property while incorporating northern solar gains.
It also needed to accommodate the clients’ lifestyle, growing family, and the practical aspects of living on a farm. This led to the inclusion of a wet entry, providing a space to remove boots and enter through the laundry.
The resulting house is comfortable, thermally efficient, and well-integrated into its surroundings. The clients reported a smooth build process, with the house performing as intended. Recycled materials, local trades, and craftspeople were extensively used, further embedding the house in the landscape.
The house is designed to be off-grid, supplying its own water and power while treating its waste. This is achieved through strong insulation, low-voltage appliances, and water-saving devices.
The house’s design ensures comfort and scenic views for the family to enjoy as they grow, offering a sustainable and enjoyable living environment for years to come.
