The 41 Cooper Square, designed by Morphosis Architects for The Cooper Union in New York, creates an interactive academic environment centered on cross-disciplinary collaboration among its three schools. Completed in 2006, the 16,258 m² building features a sky-lit atrium, vertical piazza, and sustainable elements such as a LEED Platinum rating, natural daylighting, and energy-efficient systems. The building’s transparent facade integrates the institution with the urban environment, symbolizing The Cooper Union’s commitment to open, accessible education while advancing its legacy as a leader in innovative learning in Art, Architecture, and Engineering.

The 41 Cooper Square, an academic building designed by Morphosis Architects for The Cooper Union in New York City, embodies the institution’s long-standing educational philosophy and its connection to the dynamic urban context. Established over 150 years ago, The Cooper Union is built on Peter Cooper’s vision of offering free and accessible education. The building, completed in 2006, represents a continuation of that vision while serving as a modern center for advanced studies in Art, Architecture, and Engineering.

The design prioritizes cross-disciplinary interaction among the college’s three schools, previously housed separately. At the core of the design is a vertical piazza—a central space intended for informal social, intellectual, and creative exchanges. This piazza is anchored by a 20-foot-wide grand staircase, wrapped in an undulating lattice, which ascends four stories through a sky-lit atrium extending the building’s full height. Serving as the social heart of the building, the piazza encourages spontaneous meetings, student gatherings, and intellectual debates essential to the academic environment.

From the double-height entry lobby, the grand stair rises to a glazed, double-height student lounge with city views. The fifth through ninth floors feature sky lobbies, seminar rooms, student lounges, and seating areas surrounding the central atrium. Sky bridges connect these areas, enhancing the collaborative environment. A skip-stop circulation strategy, where primary elevators stop only at the first, fifth, and eighth floors, promotes the use of the grand stair and sky bridges. Secondary elevators ensure ADA compliance and facilitate the transport of materials and equipment.

In alignment with The Cooper Union’s commitment to accessible education, 41 Cooper Square is designed to be open to the city. Transparent facades and public spaces invite the neighborhood to engage with the activities inside. Public functions such as an exhibition gallery, boardroom, and a 200-seat auditorium are located one level below grade, and accessible to the wider community.

The exterior of the building is defined by a high-performance double skin, with a semi-transparent layer of perforated stainless steel that wraps the glazed facade. This system balances environmental control with transparency, showcasing the building’s creative activities. The sculpted facade responds to the urban context, giving 41 Cooper Square a distinct identity within Cooper Square. The corner entry lifts to draw people into the lobby, reflecting the institution’s historic Foundation Building. The facade also registers the curving profile of the central atrium, connecting the building’s interior spaces to the street.

41 Cooper Square is the first LEED-certified academic laboratory building in New York City, achieving a Platinum rating. Sustainable features include operable stainless steel panels that reduce heat radiation in summer and insulate in winter, radiant heating and cooling ceiling panels that enhance the energy efficiency, and a full-height atrium that improves air circulation and natural lighting. Additionally, 75% of the building’s regularly occupied spaces are naturally lit. The green roof insulates the building, reduces the urban heat island effect, and manages stormwater runoff. The building also features a cogeneration plant that supplies additional power, recovers waste heat, and lowers energy costs.

The building’s laboratories, studios, and classrooms are designed to be flexible, adapting to evolving pedagogical methods and future research needs. By integrating advanced green technologies with vibrant social spaces and strong urban connections, 41 Cooper Square supports The Cooper Union’s tradition of fostering innovation, cross-disciplinary knowledge, and creative practices well into the future.
