“The Church of Our Lady of Trsat is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Croatia. According to the legend, angels transferred the Nazareth Tabernacle of the Holy Family to Trsat on 10 May 1291 where it remained until 1294 when angels transferred it to Loreto, Italy.

The first church was built at the end of the 13th century, and in the 15th century a new church and the Franciscan monastery were constructed. It was enlarged and re-constructed several times since.

The idea to ad a Great Hall building to the complex is connected with the Pope’s visit to Rijeka. At the beginning of June 2003 Pope John Paul II has arrived in Croatia for the third time. Being only the second Pope to visit Croatia (the first, Alexander III has been shipwrecked in 12th century), his visits had a broader social significance.

During his stay in Rijeka he has visited the Trsat church for a private prayer, and has on that occasion blessed the construction of the Monastery’s new building that would serve the pilgrims and house cultural activities of the monastery.

The new building is situated by the eastern wall, where were previously located service buildings. With this reconstruction a new major entrance for the pilgrims has been created at that part, and in order to accommodate the pedestrian flow the whole wall has been recessed creating a new public walk on the outside.

The new construction consists of two elements: a generic volume of the hall and a columned portico that is creating a new public square within the monastery. The Hall is cladded in a single terracotta-brick surface with a pixelized structure created by the changing gap between the elements, bringing the light in the hall.

The portico is supported with a series of short concrete walls, whose functional use was recognized during the 15 August pilgrimage in 2007, when these spaces have been used for confessions.”

“There were no original documents on the old church, when the project began, so it was decided that the new church would be modern but hand-built using 18th century methods. A competition was arranged in 1999 at the University of Oulu’s Department of Architecture. My Master’s thesis is based on developing the winning entry. The church is now under construction and should be completed in 2004. ….” ARCHITONIC

“There are oaks, wind and rain coming from the west. A dusty road is at the east.

Community soccer field is south; bamboo and empty beer cans all over the north.

Now there is also a wooden barn structure over a concrete platform, with corrugated metal cladding in the outside and pine boards in the inside, plus 100 chairs, lectern, altar, virgin figure and a cross.

Mass is once a month, community activities every evening. Both happen in the same space.

A new chapel for 100 people in the remote countryside of Southern Chile”

‘Farewell Chapel’, Liubliana – Slovenia by OFIS

from Noticias Arquitectura

0

” A farewell chapel is located in a village close to Ljubljana. The site plot is next to the existing graveyard. The chapel is cut into the rising landscape. The shape is following the lines of the landscape trajectories around the graveyard. Three curved walls are embracing and dividing the programs.

External curve is dividing the surrounding hill from chapel plateau and also reinstates main supporting wall. Services such as storages, wardrobe restrooms and kitchenette are on the inner side along the wall. Internal curve is embracing main farewell space. It is partly glazed and it is opening towards outside plateau for summer gatherings. Roof is following its own curvature producing external porch. Catholic sign is featured as laying cross positioned on the rooftop above the main farewell space. It also functions as luminous dynamic element across the space during the daytime and lighting spark in night time. Materials are polished concrete, larch wood, glass.”
