If you are traveling by car along Norway’s coast every so often the journey is brought to a halt by lines of vehicles waiting for a ferry to cross one of the many fjords.
Describing his latest project, a house for his own family in a leafy suburb of Bergen, Todd Saunders says, ‘It’s like three sticks, stacked on top of each other.’
It’s a new cursor at the foot of the Troll Wall. The architecture of the new visitor center next to the E139 highway results from the site’s close relation to the impressive mountain wall, one of Norway’s many nature attractions.
The holiday home is located near the village Geilo, a popular skiing destination in the valley Hallingdal. Ski resorts are abundant around the lodge, with a freestyle terrain park right next to the site.
Nothing spurs creativity as tight restrictions. Add two towering, 16 story-buildings as next-door neighbors, and it is obvious that something extraordinary had to be invented in order to make this work.
This retreat was designed and built by Todd Saunders and Tommie Wilhelmsen. A self-initiated and self-financed project.
