Architecture: Star architects emerge, but even they find limits
Architecture, arguably for the first time in its history, found itself at the very center of American cultural and political life in the decade that is wrapping up. That centrality helped make stars out of architecture’s top talents. With the aid of powerful software, adventuresome clients and, not least, a flood of new wealth and easy financing, it also produced a rush of inventive buildings, in styles stretching from fluid to wildly sculptural to neomodern.

Perkins+Will Awarded First Place at International Architecture Biennale
Perkins+Will’s Master Plan for SANY Beijing was selected as the first place winner in the “Conceptual Design” category at the 8th International Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism. The judging committee based their award selection on four central themes of the exhibition: spatiality, connectivity, originality and sustainability.

Sauerbruch Hutton’s Winning Entry for BSU Hamburg Competition
The new building for Hamburg’s Behörde für Stadtentwicklung und Umwelt/BSU (Office for Urban Development and Environment) consists of one high rise and two wing buildings. Public BSU facilities, like areas for exhibitions and restaurants, are located in the street level floors.

Platform 5’s Hackney House Extension
London-based architects Platform 5 have been awarded the first prize in the refurbishment competition “Don’t Move, Improve” for their extension to a Victorian terraced house in Hackney, London.
The competition, held by New London Architecture (NLA), was open to architects and homeowners who had completed extensions in Britain’s capital in the past five years. The NLA galleries are having all 32 shortlisted and winning designs on display until the end of January.
