Dominique Perrault to Design the New City of Sofia

French architect, Dominique Perrault, has been selected to design the new city center of Bulgaria’s capital Sofia. The jury was chaired by professor Helle Jul from Denmark, and the members were architects from Japan, France and the US.

Freelon Adjaye Bond/SmithGroup Selected for National Museum of African American History and Culture

The Smithsonian today announced that Freelon Adjaye Bond/SmithGroup has been chosen as the architectural team to design the National Museum of African American History and Culture to be located on the National Mall near the Washington Monument. The selection was made by a jury chaired by Museum Director Lonnie G. Bunch III. Freelon Adjaye Bond/SmithGroup was among six architectural firms that entered a design competition in January.

Arons en Gelauff Architects Win Annie MG Schmidt House Competition in Amsterdam

On Wednesday, April 8, Amsterdam city planning councilman Maarten van Poelgeest announced Arons en Gelauff Architects as the winner of the adaptive reuse design competition for the two former sewage treatment silos in Amsterdam’s Zeeburg district: the Annie MG Schmidt House. Annie MG Schmidt (1911-1995) is Holland’s most famous author of children’s books.

Peter Zumthor of Switzerland becomes the 2009 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate

Peter Zumthor of Switzerland has been chosen as the 2009 Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. The formal ceremony for what has come to be known throughout the world as architecture’s highest honor will be held on May 29 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. At that time, a $100,000 grant and a bronze medallion will be bestowed on the 65-year old architect

Italian Architect to Design New House of Arts and Culture in Beirut

Italian architect Alberto Catalano of Teknoarch has won the international competition to design Lebanon’s new Arts and Culture House.”
Catalano beat a large and competitive field of international firms, ateliers and individual architects with his design, earning a $75,000 prize and a commission for the project.
Funded by a $20 million gift from the Sultanate of Oman, the House of Arts and Culture will the first of its kind in Beirut. The expected completion date is early 2013.

Leeser Architecture wins design competition for five-star hotel in Zayed Bay, Abu Dhabi

Leeser Architecture, an internationally recognized design firm, has won a invited competition for a five-star luxury hotel in the Zayed Bay in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Called the Helix Hotel for its staggered floor plates, it rests in the bay, partially floating in the water and adjacent to the serpentine Sheik Zayed Bridge currently under construction by designer Zaha Hadid.
