Glasgow city council’s Bridge Arts Centre created a new library and learning centre, multifunction auditorium and a base for the National Theatre of Scotland.

” Projects ranging from a recyclable visitor centre to a rooftop nursery have been named on the 18-strong shortlist for the Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Award, announced today. The award recognises projects that have achieved high standards in design, construction and financial management. The winner will be named in October.”

The National Cold War Exhibition building at the RAF Museum in Cosgrove, Shropshire, was designed to be a physical metaphor for the Cold War’s opposing forces.

Kaleidoscope in south London brings together health and education services for children and was praised by judges as an “exemplary care facility”.

Upgrades to the King’s Cross St Pancras Tube station involved diverting two main sewers and replacing 90 metres of 19th century brick in tunnels above operational rail tracks.

The Dalby Forest visitor centre in North Yorkshire is clad in larch grown and milled in the forest and makes use of renewable energy and rainwater to reduce demand on the village well. The centre is designed to be entirely recycled at the end of its life.

The Rooftop Nursery in Clapton, east London, was built for the Learning Trust on the site of a derelict house next to a primary school and features the UK’s first granulated rubber play roof, to make the most of the limited space available.

The M60 widening project in Greater Manchester showed how integrated teamworking can deliver a three-year, £120m project to time and budget said the judges.

The Richard Desmond Children’s Eye Centre in London provides a bright and welcoming environment for young patients and their parents, and was praised by judges as a “first class investment by the NHS”.
